Beyond the Pitch: Impact DC

october 22, 2013

"I was in Washington, DC for Investors’ Circle’s Beyond The Pitch event and it was the best investment event I've been to, hands down!  Investors’ Circle exceeded my expectations as a pitching entrepreneur; this was a great opportunity for me to meet and network with many mission aligned investors in one place." -- Mark Horoszowski, CEO, MovingWorlds

The morning kicked off with sharp pitches from our high-impact entrepreneurs. From a team targeting child drowning, a company empowering local communities to recyce trash into fabric for sale, to enterprises revolutionizing education and energy efficiency, we had a wide spread of impact areas represented! Guests then enjoyed an entrepreneur showcase, which allowed the investors to interact with the entrepreneurs who just pitched. A scrumptious lunch provided by our sponsors followed, and the afternoon was highlighted by entrepreneur workshops hosted by Veris Consulting and Greenberg Traurig, and an investor-only due diligence session. A lively networking reception capped off the evening.

Host Partner Greenberg Traurig's David Gitlin, Scott Meza and Rico Vicencio led pitching company execs through a lively Q&A around their own Top 10 List of Advice for Entrepreneurs Seeking Capital. The attorneys discussed everything from making sure they select the right investor (#1 item and no problem with IC members!) to Angel and VC term sheets and other critical issues that are overlooked by inexperienced entrepreneurs and service providers. These points proved to be of great interest to the entrepreneurs in attendance, as they were fully engaged and actively participated in the Q&A format. GT’s Beth Cohen, Director of Global Emerging Growth Services, and Melissa Goldate, Business Development Manager and lead for Emerging Growth Services in the Tysons Corner, VA office, were also in attendance to assist.
Veris Consulting’s John Gillespie and Scott Cotter facilitated workshops focusing on something near and dear to investors’ hearts: financial reporting, forecasting for sales and the importance of financial systems that hum. The workshop then went on to include a lively discussion about growing your management team as you scale and best practices for talent acquisition. John and Scott lead the conversation with ideas on the best way to tackle this important part of growing a team professionally and fast. The issues covered by Veris hit on critical issues for the executives who had just pitched to our membership. Veris’ follow up includes the offer of one free hour of consult from the Veris team.

IC Members enjoyed a Members Only reception the evening before the event in beautiful downtown Washington, DC. Congratulations to CR Boardman for receiving the Leaping Frog, awarded annually to an IC member who shows exceptional engagement within the network. Thanks, CR, for your active engagement, continued service on the Selection Committee and newest role as a Hitachi mentor!

Beyond the Pitch: Impact DC would not be possible without our sponsors. Thank you to our host partner, Greenberg Traurig, and Veris Consulting, Calvert Investments, and Slow Money.
